This work is made possible by hundreds of living Native and Indigenous artists, and the innumerable ancestors before them.

For far too long, mythmakers and marketing teams have used graphic design to tell stories about Native Americans, First Nations, Métis, Alaskan Natives, Inuit, Native Hawaiians, and other Indigenous peoples rather than with them. North American visual culture has perpetuated extractive representations of the “noble savage“ that served commerce while erasing Indigenous humanity. The creators in these pages were not primitive precursors to “real“ (graphic) designers.
